A chance encounter has led to a retired couple from Bedfordshire finding their new home and a bright new future at Axwell Park by purchasing one of the luxury homes in our Courtyard development.

Dennis (72) and Judith (71) Smith were visiting the area whilst on holiday at the nearby Hagg Hill Farm and – whilst strolling through the countryside – found themselves accidentally going down a private path and discovering The Courtyard.

Dennis and Judith were not in the market for a new home when they first came across The Courtyard, but fate, it seemed, had decided to show them a new future. Dennis says:

“We have been to Hagg Hill Farm on holiday for five years in a row.  I have lived in Bedfordshire for many years but I was born in the North East and have always enjoyed returning, even though I spent most of my life living down south. The Derwent Valley was a great holiday destination for us and always had plenty to enjoy, we often took strolls around the many paths nearby.

“On one such day we happened upon the grounds of Axwell Park and the old estate buildings and were bowled over by what was being built right in front of us.  Next to the grandeur of Axwell Hall, The Courtyard looked just wonderful.  New homes but with a distinctly traditional feel and the views out over the valley were just stunning.”

Dennis continues: “We were pretty taken with the place but then we wouldn’t be the first people to go on holiday and consider living there.  However, we are probably one of the few people who actually go through with it!  We decided there and then that we wanted to enjoy our retirement in a place we have always enjoyed visiting so it just made sense to move the 230 miles to Axwell Park.

“I think the children were a bit sceptical at first about why we would want to move so far away from our friends and family but it just felt right.  To us, living here is like being on holiday every single day.  As we are both keen walkers, we can enjoy the beautiful grounds of the park as soon as we step out of the front door and as it is private parkland, it feels like we have a great big garden to explore.”

Dennis and Judith have three grown-up children who will be remaining behind in Bedfordshire, but after their initial concerns they were all in favour of their parents embarking on a new adventure.

The Smiths have purchased one of the luxurious three storey, three bedroom Beldons at The Courtyard. The layout offers a flexible lifestyle with bedrooms and bathrooms on the two lower floors and living space and kitchen at the top of the property to maximise sunlight and space onto the outside terrace.

Dennis continues: “We get to enjoy the modern luxuries of a new build home and the low maintenance lifestyle that comes with it.  We can’t underestimate how nice it is to step outside of our brand new home and still enjoy the benefits of having a property with the character and period features of a building inspired by another age.  The traditional features of The Courtyard are clearly influenced by the Georgian style of the wider park and it just adds to the overall beauty and sense of history in the area.

“The Courtyard is such a unique building.  You really feel a sense of shared community as all of the properties look out onto a lovely paved courtyard so we can enjoy the benefits of being closer to our neighbours and still have the privacy of our own home.  We are in a rural, peaceful setting and yet in reality we are so close to the centre of Newcastle, it really works for us. We feel very lucky to have found Axwell Park and get to start a new life at The Courtyard.”
